In short: In 2018, Nathan Peterman entered the NFL spotlight not for a victory, but for a statistical anomaly. During his first career start for the Buffalo Bills, he threw five interceptions in just the first half, setting a league record for interceptions in a player's debut.

Nathan Peterman's professional career is defined by a series of high-stakes, low-reward performances. A highly-rated four-star recruit from the University of Pittsburgh, Peterman was chosen by the Buffalo Bills during the 2017 NFL draft's fifth round. In 2016, he even led the Panthers to a narrow 43–42 victory over the national champion Clemson Tigers, throwing for 308 yards and five touchdowns. Before his time with the Panthers, he played for the Tennessee Volunteers under coach Derek Dooley. His high school years at Bartram Trail saw him accumulate 2,392 passing yards and 36 touchdowns.

However, his transition to the professional level was marked by extreme volatility. During the 2018 season opener, Peterman posted a 0.0 passer rating. His struggles were not isolated; between 2017 and 2018, he recorded 11 interceptions on fewer than 100 passing attempts, the highest frequency for any quarterback in that specific volume of attempts. This period of play led some media outlets, such as USA Today, to describe his performance as "historically bad." The Buffalo Bills even named him the starter for the 2018 season opener over rookie Josh Allen. This decision followed a period where both Tyrod Taylor and T. J. Yates suffered concussions.

Despite these setbacks, Peterman maintained a decade-long presence in the league, moving through rosters including the Raiders, Bears, Saints, and Falcons. His career was a cycle of being signed, released, and re-signed, often serving as a vital backup during injury crises. After eight seasons and a final retirement announcement in June 2026, the former quarterback transitioned into a new role as a sports agent, focusing on student-athlete compensation. During his tenure with the Raiders, he was fined $15,000 for violating COVID-19 protocols. He eventually moved into his current career at Range Sports.
