How an internet connection birthed an Australian metalcore powerhouse
In short: In 2009, a few musicians in Blacktown connected through shared interests and the internet. Since then, Northlane has transformed from a local heavy metal act into a global force, navigating sudden lineup changes and mastering the art of the cryptic, high-stakes digital reveal.
The origins of Northlane are rooted in the digital age. Formed in Blacksway, Australia, in 2009, the band's foundation was laid when guitarist Jon Deiley and bassist Alex Milovic connected via the internet to begin songwriting. Named after a track by the British band Architects, the group's early years were defined by a relentless touring schedule and a reputation as a tireless live act.
The band's trajectory has been marked by significant transitions. In 2014, founding vocalist Adrian Fitipaldes departed due to health reasons, leading to the recruitment of Marcus Bridge. This era ushered in a period of massive commercial success. Their 2015 album, Node, reached number one on the ARIA charts and won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at the ARIA Music Awards, a feat they repeated in 2017 with Mesmer and 2019 with Alien.
Northlane has also become masters of engagement through mystery. They have utilized cryptic Facebook chatbots named 'Citizen' to leak clues and even used white social media profile pictures to lead fans to hidden websites. Their release strategies are often sudden; for instance, Mesmer was released without any prior warning, following a period where clues had been hidden in plain sight since 2016.
Beyond the music, the band has evolved into activists, supporting charities like The Smith Family. Despite the departure of other members, such as bassist Alex Milovic in 2018, the band continues to push the boundaries of progressive metalcore, blending heavy technicality with deeply personal storytelling.
