The Redlegs: A century of dominance and dramatic SANFL turnarounds
In short: From a 19th-century powerhouse to a 1997 juggernaut, the Norwood Football Club has defined South Australian football. Whether overcoming massive deficits in Grand Finals or battling the economic shifts of the AFL era, the Redlegs have proven that in elite sport, momentum is everything.
Founded on 28 February 1878 at the Norfolk Arms Hotel, Norwood quickly established itself as a dominant force. The club's distinctive identity—the 'Redlegs' nickname—was born during their first SAFA match on 16 May 1878, when players wore striking red stockings. This early era saw unprecedented success, including a run of six consecutive premierships, a feat matched only by Port Adelaide in the 1950s.
The club's history is punctuated by extraordinary individual and team feats. In 1888, Norwood was proclaimed 'Premiers of Australia' after defeating South Melbourne. During the 19th century, Anthony 'Bos' Daly set a scoring benchmark in 1893, kicking 23 goals in a single match—a record that stood for 37 years until equalled by North Adelaide's Ken Farmer in 1940. The club has also demonstrated remarkable resilience, such as in the 1904 Grand Final, where they overcame a 35-point deficit to win by four points.
The modern era brought significant challenges, particularly the rise of the Adelaide Crows, which caused a mass exodus of talent and impacted club revenue. Despite this, Norwood achieved a rare feat in 2012 and 2013 by winning back-to-back premierships, the first time they had done so in 90 years. Their ability to navigate the complexities of the SANFL, from the dominance of the 1997 season to the professionalized era of the 2010s, cements their status as one of the league's two traditional powerhouses.
