The man who changed his name for a musical keyboard
In short: Ravi Basrur's rise to the pinnacle of Indian cinema began with a simple act of gratitude. Before becoming a household name in the Kannada film industry, he was a struggling artist whose life was transformed by a single gift and a name change.
Born as Kiran in the coastal town of Basrur, Karnataka, the man now known as Ravi Basrur underwent a significant identity shift to honor his past. During his early years as a struggling musician, a supporter provided him with a musical keyboard. This instrument became the catalyst for his career, and in a gesture of respect, he adopted the name Ravi for his professional work in the film industry.
Basrur eventually broke into the Kannada film scene by scoring the music for the movie Ugramm. This debut launched a prolific career characterized by high-octane collaborations, most notably with director Prashanth Neel. His portfolio expanded rapidly through the mid-2010s with scores for titles like Ekka Saka (2015), Just Maduveli (2015), and Karvva (2016), establishing his reputation as a versatile composer.
He reached mainstream prominence with the massive success of the K.G.F. franchise, scoring both Chapter 1 in 2018 and Chapter 2 in 2022. His work on these films earned him a Filmfare Awards South nomination for Best Music Director. Beyond composition, Basrur has also stepped into the director's chair for projects like Gargar Mandala and Girmit, while contributing to major productions featuring stars like Salman Khan.
His recent work continues to bridge regional and national appeal, including the score for Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and the upcoming project Marco. By evolving from a local musician in Kundapur to a multi-hyphenate creator, Basrur exemplifies the power of artistic persistence and the enduring impact of early mentorship.
