In short: Before Raven became a television icon, he was a cosmetics salesperson and a nightclub go-go boy. Today, his influence is so foundational that he is credited with defining the aesthetic for an entire generation of performers, moving from the stage to the Emmy podium.

Born David Petruschin in 1979, Raven's journey into drag began in 2002. Unlike many in the community who have a lineage of mentors, Petruschin did not have a 'drag mother.' He built his craft through professional experience as a freelance makeup artist for local theater and a cosmetics salesperson. This technical background eventually allowed him to transition from a nightclub performer—where he initially went by the name Phoenix—to a global drag phenomenon.

Raven's impact on the industry is often described as structural rather than just performative. He is widely cited as having created the 'face of drag,' an aesthetic so influential that it inspired RuPaul's own original makeup artist and serves as the blueprint for many contemporary queens. This influence was cemented during his time on RuPaul's Drag Race, where he secured a runner-up finish in both Season 2 and the first All Stars season (2012).

His career has since expanded into high-level production and industry recognition. Since the ninth season of Drag Race, Petruschin has served as RuPaul's primary makeup artist and a creative producer for the franchise. His technical mastery was officially recognized in 2020 when he won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the series. While he now focuses primarily on film projects, his legacy remains visible in every high-glamour makeover across the global drag scene.

Beyond the competition, Raven has balanced various personas: from the 'Makeover Queen' who mentored contestants on RuPaul's Drag U to a commercial icon appearing in advertisements for travel and television. His ability to blend technical artistry with a distinct visual identity transformed how drag is packaged for mainstream media.
