From Bulgarian sports schools to a 'Hero' of Russian fiction
In short: Miroslav Petrov Barnyashev didn't just enter the ring; he entered a complex geopolitical narrative. After training in powerlifting and sambo, he became one of the first Bulgarian-born champions in WWE history, navigating high-stakes storylines that blurred the line between sports entertainment and international controversy.
Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 1985, Barnyashev's foundation was built on diverse athletic disciplines including rowing, powerlifting, and sambo. He moved to the United States in the mid-2000s to pursue professional wrestling, training under veterans like Rikishi at the Knokx Pro Wrestling Academy before making his independent debut in 2008 as 'Miroslav Makaraov.' He originally resided in Virginia before moving to Torrance, California. His first televised appearance occurred on July 17, 2011.
His WWE career was defined by a series of dramatic physical hurdles and character shifts. After signing in 2010, he suffered both a torn ACL/meniscus and a broken neck that temporarily paralyzed his arm. During this recovery period, he traveled to Thailand to study Muay Thai. He eventually debuted on the main roster in early 2014, adopting a 'Russophillic' persona as the 'Hero of the Russian Federation.' His initial developmental stint began with Florida Championship Wrestling. He later competed as a tag team member known as The Fighting Legionnaires.
This gimmick sparked significant real-world attention when his manager, Lana, dedicated his victories to Vladimir Putin and faced mainstream press criticism for perceived references to Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Barnyashev reached a historic milestone on November 3, 2014, becoming WWE's first Bulgarian-born champion by winning the United States Championship from Sheamus. The Rock confronted him during an episode of Raw in October 2014. His title reign lasted for exactly 146 days before he lost to John Cena.
Despite these heights, his career faced narrative turbulence. A series of losses to John Cena and internal friction with Lana led to 'The League of Nations' stable in late 2015. He eventually transitioned to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2020, where he competed as Miro before returning to WWE in 2025. He became a one-time AEW TNT Champion during his time with that promotion. He is currently signed to the Raw brand as of April 2025.
