From Aberdeen academy to European finals: the journey of Ryan Jack
In short: A hometown boy turned captain, Ryan Jack has navigated the intense rivalries of Scottish football. From scoring spectacular halfway-line goals to playing in a UEFA Europa League final, his career is a testament to resilience through injury and the weight of high-stakes competition.
Born in Aberdeen in 1992, Ryan Jack's connection to his hometown club began at age eight. He spent 17 years within the Aberdeen system, eventually making his first-team league debut against Rangers in September 2010. His early years were marked by significant milestones, including a goal against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in January 2011 that was voted the club's Goal of the Season, and a stunning winner from the halfway line against St Johnstone in December 2011.
Jack's tenure at Aberdeen saw him rise to the captaincy in 2015, helping the club secure the 2013–14 Scottish League Cup. After leaving as a free agent in 2017, he joined Rangers, a club he had supported since childhood. During a seven-year stint at Ibrox, he achieved significant success, including winning the 2020–21 Scottish Premiership—Rangers' first league title since 2011—and the 2022 Scottish Cup, where he scored the opening goal in a 2–0 victory over Hearts.
His international career with Scotland has been equally eventful. After representing various youth levels, including captaining the Under-21 side, he made his full debut against the Netherlands in November 2017. Despite facing mixed reactions from crowds due to club rivalries, Jack has been a consistent figure in the national setup, even earning selection for the UEFA Euro 2024 squad despite limited club minutes. His journey has been punctuated by challenges, including knee and calf injuries that required surgery, yet he continues to compete, most recently joining Esenler Erokspor in September 2024.
