The relentless edge rusher who redefined Washington's defensive legacy
In short: From a three-star recruit to an NFL icon, Ryan Kerrigan has become a master of the 3–4 defense. Known for his tenacity, he holds franchise records for both sacks and forced fumbles, proving that consistency is the ultimate weapon on the gridiron.
Ryan Kerrigan's ascent began at Purdue University, where his dominance earned him unanimous All-American honors and the school's 'Pit Bull Award' for tenacity in 2009. After being selected 16th overall in the 2011 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins, he immediately made an impact, returning an interception for a touchdown in his first career start against the New York Giants.
Throughout an 11-season career, Kerrigan became a cornerstone of the Washington defense. With 95.5 sacks and 26 forced fumbles, he holds the franchise's career records for both categories. His ability to disrupt plays was evidenced by his record-breaking run in college, where he once held the FBS career record for forced fumbles with 12.
Kerrigan's longevity is equally remarkable. He holds the NFL record for consecutive starts by a left outside linebacker. Even when facing physical setbacks, such as a torn lateral meniscus in 2013, he continued to perform at an elite level. His career included multiple Pro Bowl selections and a 2026 College Football Hall of Fame nomination.
Beyond the statistics, Kerrigan's career is a study in versatility. While he spent most of his tenure as an outside linebacker in a 3–4 defensive scheme, he transitioned to defensive end in a 4–3 scheme during his final two seasons. This adaptability helped him maintain his status as one of the most consistent defensive players in the league.
