From Everton prodigy to Huddersfield captain: the resilient rise of Ryan Ledson
In short: He was once hailed as the next Frank Lampard, a midfield talent destined for the Premier League. Yet, after a single first-team appearance for Everton, Ryan Ledxon had to navigate the grueling lower leagues to rebuild his career and reclaim his leadership.
Ryan Ledson’s journey began in the Everton academy, where he joined at age five. By 2014, his potential was undeniable; he was named the club's Academy Player of the Season and received the prestigious Keith Tamlin Award. His technical profile—described by the Liverpool Echo as an aggressive, ball-playing central midfielder with strengths in tackling and passing—earned him comparisons to the legendary Frank Lampard.
However, the transition to senior football was far from linear. While he signed a three-year professional contract on his 17th birthday, his only appearance for the Everton first team came in a 0–1 UEFA Europa League loss against FC Krasnodar on 11 December 2014. Seeking regular minutes, Ledson embarked on a series of moves, including a successful loan at Cambridge United in 2015 and a permanent transfer to Oxford United in August 2016.
At Oxford, Ledson faced significant setbacks, including a knee injury sustained during a warm-up. Despite this, he found his scoring touch, notably netting a 35-yard goal against Rochdale in January 2017. His career continued to evolve through stints at Preston North End, where he was named the 2020–21 Players and Supporters Player of the Year, and eventually to Huddersfield Town. Joining the League One side on a free transfer in May 2025, Ledson has come full circle, transitioning from a highly-touted academy prospect to a seasoned club captain.
