From basketball lineages to record-breaking transfers: the rise of Sander Berge
In short: Sander Berge’s journey from a Norwegian youth prospect to a Premier League mainstay is defined by rapid evolution. By age 17, he was already scoring goals in cup competitions, eventually becoming one of the most expensive signings in his club's history while navigating the highs and lows of English football.
Born in Bærum in 1998, Berge emerged from a family deeply rooted in sports. While he followed his father, mother, and older brother into international-level basketball, his own path led to the pitch. He began his senior career with Asker before moving to Vålerenga, where he made a high-profile debut at just 17 years old. By 2016, his rapid development was recognized when he was named the Norwegian league's young player of the year. His move to Belgium in 2017 served as a major catalyst for his professional growth. Joining Genk, Berge became an essential component of a squad that secured the Belgian championship in the 2018–19 season and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.
His performances were so impactful that UEFA named him in their Champions League breakthrough team for 2019, following his debut in a match against RB Salzburg. Berge's transition to the English Premier League has been a study in resilience. In 2020, he became Sheffield United's record signing on a four-and-a-half-year deal. However, a significant injury during a loss to Manchester United in late 2020 sidelined him for much of the following season as the club faced relegation. He eventually helped secure promotion back to the top flight in the 2022–23 season before moving to Burnley and then joining Fulham in August 2024 on a deal worth £25 million including potential add-ons.
Ragnar Berge, his grandfather, represented Vålerenga as a left-back between 1945 and 1957, while also appearing for Norway once during 1955.
