A high-stakes spy thriller that struggled to escape its own shadow
In short: Released in September 2026, Sardar 2 attempted to expand a successful franchise through an ambitious, international spy narrative. Despite strong performances from its lead cast, the film faced critical scrutiny for its predictable plot and heavy reliance on AI-generated visuals, ultimately failing to match the impact of its predecessor.
Directed by P. S. Mithran, the film functions as both a prequel and a sequel to the 2022 film Sardar. The narrative follows veteran RAW operative Chandra Bose, known as "Sardar," and his son, Inspector Vijay Prakash. The plot centers on a bio-chemical weapon called Doku—capable of killing hundreds of thousands in seconds—which was unleashed years prior, killing 3,000 villagers. This historical tragedy left Sardar in a state of intense guilt after his failed attempt to secure the antidote, Colistin, from Japan. The plot involves three secret agents who each hold a specific key to access the weapon. This mission forces the protagonist out of his long exile.
The story escalates when a mercenary group led by the villain Black Dagger attempts to seize the keys to the Doku weapon, threatening 140 crore people. The film's production was marked by significant delays and challenges. Filming, which began in July 2024, was interrupted by a fatal accident involving a stuntman and a leg injury sustained by lead actor Karthi during a sequence in Mysore. Extensive post-production was required due to the heavy use of visual effects, pushing the release to September 10, 2026. Production took place across various locations including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Bangkok. The crew also filmed in several Indian cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kochi.
Upon release, critics offered mixed reviews. While Karthi and S. J. Suryah received praise for their performances, the film was criticized for its lengthy runtime, predictable narrative, and the use of AI-generated visuals. Despite its ambitious scope and social messaging, the film was deemed a box-office bomb and was considered inferior to the original 2022 film. The soundtrack was composed by Sam C. S. for his hundredth film project. Despite the mixed reception, some reviewers noted the film's strong social awareness message.
