The punk band that broke up three times—and then twice more
In short: Screeching Weasel is a masterclass in the volatile lifecycle of independent music. From recording their debut for just $200 to enduring decade-long legal battles over masters, the Chicago outfit has spent nearly 40 years navigating internal friction, revolving lineups, and the messy reality of artistic ownership.
Ben Weasel and John Jughead started Screeching Weasel during 1986, which rapidly became known for its fast-paced punk style. Their debut album was recorded in a single night for $200 on the Chicago label Underdog Records. The band's early identity was shaped by rapid turnover; shortly after formation, Weasel swapped roles because he found it too difficult to sing and play bass simultaneously, leading to the recruitment of Vinnie Bovine (Vince Vogel).
The group’s history is defined by a cycle of dissolution and resurrection. They disbanded twice in the early 1990s—the first time due to members wanting to focus on side projects like Sludgeworth, and the second following a fallout between Weasel and bassist Dan Vapid. They reunited briefly in 1990 for a one-off gig intended solely to pay off debts incurred from previous recordings. This pattern repeated until a third breakup in July 2001, triggered by Jughead’s frustration over the band's lack of touring.
The most significant friction arose during a two-year legal battle over business affairs and masters between Weasel and Jughead. While Weasel eventually reclaimed the masters from Lookout! Records in 2004, the split was described as 'not amicable,' with their friendship reaching a point of no return. In 2009, Weasel reformed the band without Jughead, leading to a public dispute where Jughead claimed the new iteration wasn't the original band because it lacked his involvement and shared history.
Despite never achieving mainstream success, Screeching Weasel remains influential in the punk scene. Their discography includes 14 studio albums, with 'Bark Like a Dog' reaching number 34 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in 1996. The band’s narrative serves as a poignant look at the logistical and personal costs of maintaining an independent musical legacy.
