The resilient journey of a defender who overcame repeated career-threatening injuries
In short: From a promising German youth international to a cornerstone of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, Sead Kolašinac’s career has been defined by physical strength and remarkable resilience. He has navigated significant transitions across Europe's top leagues while overcoming devastating, career-threatening knee injuries that sidelined him for many months.
Born in Germany on 20 June 1993, Sead Kolašinac’s path through European football has been marked by significant transitions and physical setbacks. After progressing through the youth academies of Karlsruher SC, TSG Hoffenheim, and VfB Stuttgart, he joined Schalke 04 in 2011. It was there that he signed his first professional contract in June 2012 and made his professional debut in September 2012 against Greuther Fürth.
His career has been punctuated by severe injuries, most notably an anterior cruciate ligament tear in August 2014 that sidelined him for over seven months. He faced a similar setback in April 2025, suffering another ruptured ACL that required a recovery period of at least half a year. Despite these challenges, he has maintained a high level of performance across Europe's top leagues, playing for Arsenal, Marseille, and Atalanta.
On the international stage, Kolašinac made a significant choice to switch sports citizenship. Despite representing Germany at the youth level, he received FIFA approval in November 2013 to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He debuted for his senior national side that same month against Argentina and went on to represent the nation at their first major championship, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the pitch, Kolašinac is known for his physical presence and strength. His career highlights include winning the FA Cup with Arsenal in August 2020 and the UEFA Europa League with Atalanta in May 2024. He also famously defended himself during an attempted carjacking in July 2019.
