From midfield to striker: the resilient rise of Saša Kalajdžić
In short: After a career-altering knee injury in 2019, Saša Kalajdžić faced a grueling path back to professional football. Yet, the Austrian striker transformed from a midfielder into a prolific forward, eventually securing a £15 million transfer to the Premier League and representing his country on the world stage.
Born in Vienna in 1997, Saša Kalajdžić’s professional trajectory has been defined by both tactical evolution and physical resilience. Originally a midfielder for the reserve side of FC Admira Wacker Mödling, he underwent a positional conversion to become a forward. This shift proved successful; after scoring twelve goals in 35 matches for Admira Wacker in 2016, he moved to Germany to join VfB Stuttgart in July 2019.
His time in Germany was nearly derailed by a torn cruciate ligament sustained during a preseason training camp in 2019. Following a long recovery, he finally made his debut in May 2020, eventually scoring 24 goals in 60 appearances for the club. His performances helped Stuttgart secure their place in the Bundesliga for the 2022–23 season, including a decisive winning goal against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 25.
In August 2022, Kalajdžić moved to the English Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £15 million. However, his debut against Southampton was cut short by an ACL tear, leading to surgery on 6 September 2022. This injury became a recurring theme; he suffered a third ACL tear within five years during a match against SC Freiburg on 18 February 2024, causing him to miss the entire 2024–25 season.
Despite these setbacks, Kalajdžić has remained a vital asset for the Austrian national team. After making his senior debut in October 2020, he has participated in major tournaments, including Euro 2020 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Notably, he scored a crucial stoppage-time equalizer against Algeria on 27 June 2026, helping Austria reach the knockout stages.
