In short: Skip Holtz wasn't a star player; at Notre Dame, he lacked the throwing ability to be a quarterback and never even caught a pass. Yet, through a series of strategic moves and family connections, he rose from a special teams player to a championship-winning head coach.

Born in 1964, Skip Holtz’s path to the sidelines was paved by his father, Lou Holtz. Growingly exposed to the game through his father's various coaching stops—from South Carolina to New York—Skip’s professional entry into coaching was almost instantaneous. In 1987, after a brief stint at Holy Cross to improve his academic standing, he joined Florida State as a graduate assistant, a role offered by Bobby Bowden with remarkable speed.

Holtz's career is defined by a remarkable ability to rebuild struggling programs. At East Carolina, he inherited a team that had won only three games in 25 attempts, eventually leading them to back-to-back conference championships in 2008 and 2009. He repeated this feat with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, securing a 9–5 record and a bowl win in 2014. After guiding the Birmingham Stallions to USFL trophies during 2022 and 2023, he secured a UFL title in 2024.

However, his career has not been without friction. His tenure at South Carolina was marked by a demotion to quarterbacks coach during a staff shakeup, and his time at USF ended in dismissal following a 3–9 season in 2012. Even his recent success in Birmingham faced an abrupt end; on December 16, 2025, Holtz was removed from the Stallions in response to a league-wide roster dispersal plan. Despite these setbacks, Holtz maintains an overall head coaching record of 152 wins and 121 losses.
