The Belgian defender who conquered Europe, one goal at a time
In short: From the Ajax academy to the heights of Barcelona, Thomas Vermaelen’s career was defined by leadership and an unusual knack for scoring. Though injuries often sidelined him, the 'Verminator' remained a formidable presence in the world's most prestigious defensive lines.
Born in Kapellen, Belgium, on 14 November 1985, Vermaelen rose through the ranks of the Ajax youth academy, winning the Eredivisie title in his debut 2003–04 season. His early years in the Netherlands established him as a versatile, left-footed defender capable of playing as both a centre-back and a left-back, noted specifically for his aerial strength and ball control.
His move to Arsenal in June 2009 marked a period of individual brilliance and high-profile responsibility. After an impressive debut season that earned him a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, he eventually ascended to the club captaincy in 2012. However, his time in London was frequently interrupted by significant Achilles tendon injuries, which began during international duty in the 2010–11 season.
Vermaelen's trophy cabinet spans several nations. He secured the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2014 before a £15 million transfer to Barcelona. In Spain, he achieved global success, including winning the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup. His later career saw him bring his experience to Roma and eventually Vissel Kobe in Japan, where he won the 2019 Emperor's Cup.
On the international stage, Vermaelen was a pillar of the Belgian national team, representing his country at the 2008 Olympics, the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and the 2016 and 2021 European Championships. Following his retirement in 2021, he transitioned into coaching, joining the Belgian staff as an assistant for the 2022 World Cup.
