In short: Between 1921 and 1944, the Tuvan People's Republic existed as a partially recognized state nestled between Russia and Mongolia. Despite its brief independence, it became a fervent ally of the Soviet Union, eventually donating nearly its entire gold reserve and vast quantities of livestock to support the war effort against Germany.

Originally part of the Manchu Qing dynasty, the region known as Tannu Uriankhai gained independence following the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. After years of political instability and shifting protectorates, the Tuvan People's Republic was declared in 1921 under the influence of the Bolsheviks. The new state initially sought to balance its autonomy with Soviet support, but internal tensions soon emerged between traditionalists and Moscow-backed communists.

In 1929, a Soviet-backed coup ousted Prime Minister Donduk Kuular, who had attempted to preserve Buddhist traditions and limit Soviet influence. His removal triggered a brutal purge of the intelligentsia, lamas, and political dissidents, alongside the forced collectivization of nomadic cattle-breeders. By 1932, Salchak Toka had emerged as the de facto leader, a position he would hold until 1973. Under his rule, the republic underwent intense Sovietization, including the adoption of the Cyrillic alphabet and the alignment of national symbols with Soviet standards.

During World War II, Tuva became a staunch supporter of the Soviet Union. Beyond military training and the donation of thousands of war horses and winter supplies, the republic transferred its entire gold reserve of approximately 20,000,000 rubles to Moscow. This deep integration culminated in 1944, when the Tuvan parliament requested the republic be absorbed into the Soviet Union. The request was granted, and on 1 November 1944, the independent state ceased to exist, becoming the Tuvan Autonomous Oblast within the Russian SFSR.
