From junior Grand Slam champion to the WTA top 200
In short: Tyra Caterina Grant’s ascent in professional tennis has been marked by remarkable speed and versatility. After dominating the junior circuit with multiple Grand Slam titles, the Italian player transitioned to the senior tour, achieving a career-high ranking and a major championship win in just a few seasons.
Born in Rome on March 12, 2008, Grant’s early tennis development was shaped by a multicultural background. The daughter of American former basketball player Tyrone Grant and Italian tennis teacher Cinzia Giovinco, she trained at the Piatti Tennis Center in Bordighera alongside Jannik Sinner before moving to the USTA National Campus in Orlando. While she initially competed under the United States flag, she officially switched her representation to Italy at age 17 in May 2025. Her professional journey is supported by her mother, who also serves as her manager. She shares her athletic lineage with her younger brother, Tyson, who is also pursuing a career in tennis.
Grant’s junior career was defined by dominance in doubles. She secured prestigious titles at the 2023 French Open, the 2024 Australian Open, and the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Her success in the junior ranks provided a springboard for her professional breakthrough. In 2025, she achieved significant team success as a champion in the Billie Jean King Cup representing Italy. Her doubles success also includes a runner-up finish at the 2024 French Open. Earlier, in December 2022, she secured the Orange Bowl doubles title in Florida alongside Iva Jovic.
The transition to the WTA Tour saw rapid milestones. In April 2026, she secured her first WTA Tour singles victory at the Madrid Open by defeating Elsa Jacquemot. By June 2026, she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 157. That same month, she demonstrated her prowess on the big stage by qualifying for her first singles major main draw at Wimbledon, where she upset home favorite Katie Boulter in straight sets without facing a single break point. Her rise continued through May 2026, when a victory over Caroline Werner helped her break into the top 200. Her professional path also included a runner-up finish at the 2026 Open delle Puglie.
