Tyreke Evans: From Rookie of the Year to an NBA ban
In short: In 2010, Tyreke Evans joined an elite group of superstars including LeBron James. A decade later, his career faced a sudden, jarring halt. How does a top-four draft pick go from championship potential to being disqualified from the league?
Tyreke Evans entered the NBA with immense expectations. After a stellar high school career at American Christian Academy—where he averaged 32.1 points and 8.8 rebounds during his senior year—he was a highly touted recruit. After playing for the Memphis Tigers, he was selected fourth overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. His influence was felt instantly; he secured the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and joined icons such as Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, and LeBron James as the fourth debutant to post averages of 20+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 5+ assists. Before entering the professional ranks, he was recognised as the McDonald's High School All-American Game MVP. He also earned co-MVP honours at the Jordan Brand Classic alongside Brandon Jennings.
However, Evans' professional journey was marked by significant volatility. His career saw numerous trades between the Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis Grizzlies, and Indiana Pacers, alongside several injury setbacks, including plantar fasciitis and knee surgeries. During the 2011 NBA lockout, he even played for Virtus Roma in Italy before returning to the Kings. His tenure in New Orleans included a career-high 41-point performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Furthermore, he previously overcame a 35-point gap to beat the Chicago Bulls.
The most dramatic shift occurred in May 2019. Following the 2019 season, Evans was dismissed and disqualified from the NBA for violating the league's anti-drug program. This suspension lasted until February 2022, when he was officially reinstated. Following his return, he attempted a comeback with the Wisconsin Herd in the NBA G League, but was waived shortly after. His time with the Indiana Pacers included a playoff career-high of 21 points during a series against Boston. After his reinstatement, he briefly joined the Wisconsin Herd before being released.
