The resilient Italian football club that refused to die after bankruptcy
In short: From the heights of Serie A to the brink of total disappearance, US Avellino 1912 embodies the volatile drama of Italian football. Known as the Wolves of Irpinia, this provincial side has survived bankruptcies, exclusions, and administrative collapses to reclaim its place in the professional ranks.
Founded on 12 December 1912, US Avellino 1912 began as a modest representative for its namesake town in Campania. For much of its early history, the club operated in the shadows of regional competition, playing in the IV Divisione—a level comparable to today's Serie D—until after the Second World War. It wasn't until the post-war era that the club began its ascent, notably reaching Serie C for the 1945–46 season and eventually climbing to Serie B after defeating sides like Catania and Messina.
The club's golden era arrived between 1978 and 1988, a remarkable ten-year consecutive stay in Serie A. During this decade, the 'Wolves' established themselves as a formidable mid-table presence, even securing the Torneo Estivo trophy in 1986 by defeating giants like Juventus and Inter. This period was defined by legendary players such as Angelo Alessio and Paolo Benedetti, whose impact was so profound that the number 10 of Adriano Lombardi was retired in 2007 as a posthumous honor.
However, the modern era has been defined by survival against institutional collapse. The club faced two major existential crises: a 2009 bankruptcy and a 2018 exclusion from Serie B due to incomplete paperwork regarding a bank guarantee. Each time, the club was forced to re-found itself to restart in Serie D. Despite these administrative heartbreaks and various name changes—including Avellino Calcio.12 S.S.D. and Associazione Sportiva Avellino 1912—the club has consistently fought its way back through the lower divisions, proving that its identity remains tied to the community of Avellino.
