Why K-pop labels are building their own digital ecosystems to own the fan experience
In short: Weverse is not just another social media app. Created by Hybe, it functions as a comprehensive one-stop service for K-pop fans, integrating merchandise, video content, and direct artist communication. By moving away from third-party platforms like Twitter, labels are securing long-term control over their most valuable digital assets.
The platform was developed by Weverse Company, a technology subsidiary of Hybe Corporation, formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment. According to former Weverse Company president Seo Wooseok, the app was designed to foster deeper fan-artist interactions than those possible on platforms like YouTube or Twitter, which prioritize content delivery over community engagement. Hybe co-CEO Lenzo Yoon described the vision as a comprehensive service for the music industry.
Industry analysts, such as Jenny Zha of the consultancy firm Infinitize, note that major acts like BTS no longer need to focus on discovery. Instead, the priority has shifted toward monetization and content ownership. By hosting their own platforms, labels create secure, proprietary assets that fans follow, regardless of which artists are currently active. Even when groups disband or contracts expire, their communities remain accessible, preserving the legacy of the content.
Weverse has evolved significantly since its inception. It launched with Tomorrow X Together in June 2019, followed quickly by BTS and GFriend. The platform expanded its reach through strategic partnerships, such as the 2021 investment in YG Plus, which brought artists like Blackpink to the app, and a 2023 agreement involving SM Entertainment. By May 2024, the platform consolidated its e-commerce operations, discontinuing the standalone Weverse Shop app in favor of an integrated experience.
The platform now serves over 10 million monthly users, offering a mix of free and subscription-based content. Its reach extends beyond Hybe’s own labels to include international acts under Universal Music Group and various Japanese and Filipino artists. By centralizing everything from official statements to merchandise, Weverse demonstrates how modern entertainment companies are transforming from content creators into platform owners to ensure long-term security in a digital-first market.
