The Belfast stadium caught in a legal battle over state aid
In short: Windsor Park is the historic heart of Northern Irish football, but its survival has not been guaranteed. From massive structural cracks to high-stakes judicial reviews, the stadium's recent history is a complex saga of redevelopment, political funding, and intense legal challenges that nearly halted its future.
Opened in 1905, Windsor Park serves as the home of Linfield and the Northern Ireland national team. While the land is owned by Linfield, the Irish Football Association operates the stadium. Throughout the 20th century, the venue underwent significant transformations, including a major development in the 1930s designed by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch. At its peak, the stadium could hold 60,000 spectators, featuring iconic areas like the Spion Kop terrace.
The stadium's modern era has been defined by a contentious redevelopment project. In 2011, the Northern Ireland Executive allocated £28 million toward transforming the venue into a 20,000-capacity all-seater stadium. However, the project faced a significant legal hurdle in 2013 when Crusaders filed a judicial review. They argued that the government funding constituted illegal state aid to Linfield, a claim that a judge initially found to be an arguable case.
Structural issues further complicated the stadium's future. In March 2015, large cracks were discovered in the West Stand following a match against Finland. This necessitated the demolition of the stand and forced the 2015 Irish Cup Final to be moved to The Oval. Despite these setbacks, the stadium remains a premier venue, having hosted the 2021 UEFA Super Cup and various UEFA European Under-19 Championships.
The stadium's identity is also evolving through commercial ventures. On 7 May 2025, the Larne-based drink manufacturer Clearer Group purchased the naming rights, officially renaming the venue the "Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park".
