The unlikely protector of Makochi: how a delinquent school became a community shield
In short: Haruka Sakura arrived at Furin High School expecting a brutal hierarchy of strength. Instead, he discovered Bofurin, a group of students dedicated not to chaos, but to the protection of their town. This is the story of how an outcast found a purpose far greater than his own fighting prowess.
Since its serialization began in January 2021 on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket, Satoru Nii's manga series, Wind Breaker, has evolved from a tale of street brawls into a complex study of community and acceptance. The protagonist, Haruka Sakura, is a first-year transfer student whose heterochromia and social isolation led him to be ostracized. Driven by a desire to reach the top of the school's hierarchy, Sakura initially views strength as his only value, a trait forged by a lifetime of harsh treatment.
However, the reality of Furin High School contradicts the rumors of pure academic neglect. The students, known as Bofurin, operate with a specific mission: safeguarding the town of Makochi from harm. This shift in perspective is central to Sakura's development. While he struggles to accept the kindness of townspeople and classmates, he eventually learns to fight for others rather than just for himself. This transition is supported by a diverse cast, including the knowledgeable Nirei, the mysterious, Aikido-style fighter Suō, and the powerful, devoted Sugishito.
The series' expansion into other media has solidified its presence. An anime adaptation by CloverWorks aired between April and June 2024, followed by a second season from April to June 2025. The franchise even reached the big screen with a live-action film released in Japan in December 2025. As the story progresses through 27 tankōbon volumes as of September 2026, the narrative explores the tension between various factions, such as the Shishitoren and the violent crime boss Natori of KEEL, testing the bonds of the Bofurin students.
