In short: Most players strive for the starting XI, but Willy Caballero built a legendary career by being the ultimate insurance policy. From saving Neymar's penalty to winning the Champions League on the bench, the Argentine goalkeeper proved that being decisive when called upon is just as vital as being the first choice.

Wilfredo Daniel Caballero Lazcano’s career is a masterclass in adaptability and mental fortitude. While many players struggle with the lack of consistent minutes, the Argentine goalkeeper thrived in high-stakes, intermittent roles. His ability to perform under immense pressure was most evident in his shot-stopping, particularly during penalty shootouts. He famously saved three penalties to secure Manchester City's 2016 League Cup victory and once denied Neymar during a Champions League clash against Barcelona in 2016.

His journey took him from the early successes of Boca Juniors in 2001 to becoming a fixture in La Liga with Elche and Málaga. At Málaga, he set a club record by maintaining a clean sheet for 480 minutes in 2011. His career also saw him navigate significant personal and professional shifts, including a loan to Arsenal de Sarandí to care for his daughter during her battle with cancer, and a transition from a traditional goalkeeper to a 'sweeper keeper' capable of participating in build-up play under Pep Guardiola.

Even in the twilight of his playing days, Caballero remained a presence in the Premier League, serving as a reliable backup for Chelsea and later Southampton. His international career followed a similar pattern of late-blooming brilliance; despite being part of gold-medal winning Olympic squads as early as 2004, he did not earn his first senior cap for Argentina until the age of 36 in 2018. After retiring at 41 in 2023, he transitioned into coaching, bringing his experience in leadership and tactical discipline to the backroom staffs of Leicester City and Chelsea.
