From a family of fourteen to the NFL's bright lights
In short: Zay Flowers overcame profound personal loss and a modest recruiting start to become a record-breaking star. Rising from Fort Lauderdale to the Baltimore Ravens, his journey is a testament to resilience, marked by historic rookie performances and a historic first for his family.
Born on September 11, 2000, Xavien 'Zay' Flowers grew up as the 11th of 14 children in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His early years were marked by significant hardship; his mother, Jackie Walden, passed away from a head injury when he was only five, and his brother, Martin, was later murdered during Flowers' high school years. Despite these tragedies, Flowers excelled at NSU University School, where he played both cornerback and wide receiver, leading his team to consecutive state semifinals.
His path to professional football was not immediate. Initially ranked as the nation's 135th receiver recruit, he committed to Boston College. During his collegiate career, he became a prolific force, breaking school records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. His development even included training alongside NFL veterans like Antonio Brown and Geno Smith while his campus was closed due to COVID-19 in 2020. He eventually became the first person in his family to earn a university degree, graduating in May 2026 with a degree in communications.
The Baltimore Ravens selected Flowers with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and his impact was instantaneous. In his debut season, he set franchise rookie records with 77 receptions and 858 receiving yards. His ascent continued through 2024, where he recorded 1,050 yards and 8 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection in January 2025. Following a massive four-year, $140 million contract extension in August 2026, Flowers has cemented his status as a cornerstone of the Ravens' offense.
