From Bosnian roots to leading Turkey's volleyball dynasty
In short: Zehra Güneş is not just a middle blocker; she is a cornerstone of one of the most dominant volleyball eras in history. Her journey from a youth standout to the captain of Vakıfbank Istanbul illustrates a meteoric rise defined by consistent gold medals and international dominance.
Born in 1999 to parents of Bosnian descent, Güneş emerged as a prodigy in the youth ranks. At 16 years old, she secured the Best Middle Blocker award during Peru's 2015 FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship, marking her entry into international competition. Her early career was marked by a rapid ascent through various age categories, including a gold medal at the 2017 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship in Slovenia, where she was again recognized for her defensive prowess.
Her transition to the senior level was equally swift. After being invited to the Turkish national team in early 2017, she became a regular fixture by 2018. She quickly became a vital component of the Turkish squad that secured silver at the inaugural 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League.
Her domestic career with Vakıfbank Istanbul has been defined by unparalleled success, contributing to a string of league titles spanning from the 2017–18 season through the 2025–26 season. On the international stage, Güneş has been a primary catalyst for Turkey's recent golden era. In 2023, she played a pivotal role in securing Turkey's first-ever European Championship gold and a Volleyball Nations League title, where she was named the tournament's best Middle Blocker. Her leadership was officially cemented in 2024, when she was named Captain of Vakıfbank for the 2024–25 season, following a career of high-stakes performances in the Olympics and World Championships.
