The high cost of idol fame and the fight for autonomy
In short: Before becoming a K-pop star, Zelo dreamed of the soccer field. His transition to the stage sparked a career defined by artistic ambition, complex legal battles over unfair contracts, and a persistent drive to reclaim his independence from the machinery of the music industry.
Zelo's journey into the spotlight began in Mokpo, South Korea. After shifting his aspirations from soccer to music, he began self-training in beatboxing and dance. His talent led him to the Joy Dance - Plug In Music Academy in Gwangju by the 5th grade. Despite initial rejections from various companies due to his youth, he eventually secured a trainee position at TS Entertainment, graduating from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2015.
His professional debut came in late 2011 with the sub-unit Bang&Zelo, followed by his official reveal as a rapper for the sextet B.A.P in early 2012. However, the group's trajectory was soon marked by industrial friction. In November 2014, B.A.P filed a lawsuit against TS Entertainment, alleging 'unfair conditions and profit distribution.' While a settlement allowed the group to resume activities in August 2015, the underlying tensions persisted until Zelo chose not to renew his contract in December 2018.
Zelo's subsequent solo career highlights the ongoing struggle for artist rights. After signing with A Entertainment in early 2019, he attempted to terminate his contract in August 2021, citing unpaid wages. A lawsuit followed, with the Seoul Central District Court eventually ruling in his favor and certifying the contract annulment one year later. This cycle of litigation underscores the systemic challenges performers face when navigating exclusive industry agreements.
Following his mandatory military service (December 2023 to June 2025), Zelo has continued to navigate new partnerships with labels like Uzurocks and Vlacksquad. His career serves as a case study on the evolution of the K-pop artist from a corporate asset to an independent entity seeking legal and creative sovereignty.
