Could the Sun vanish without us noticing for eight minutes?

Proving Einstein Right! - Professor Ian Morison · 55:17 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: If the Sun suddenly disappeared, Newton’s laws suggest Earth would instantly fly into the void. But Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicts a delay. Recent observations of black hole mergers and light-speed limits suggest Einstein’s vision of a curved, undulating universe is at least 9ly 99.95% accurate.

In 1915, Albert Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity, a framework that reimagines gravity not as a mysterious force, but as the curvature of a four-dimensional space-time continuum. In this model, mass warps the fabric of the universe. To visualize this, imagine a flat rubber sheet: a heavy ball placed on it creates a depression, causing smaller objects to follow curved paths. In a 'flat' or Euclidean space, light travels in straight lines and triangle angles sum to 180 degrees. However, the presence of mass introduces positive curvature, causing initially parallel light beams to converge.

This curvature leads to a profound departure from Newtonian physics. Under Newton’s Law of Gravity, the loss of the Sun's mass would cause Earth to instantly depart on a tangent. Einstein, however, postulated that information about gravitational changes must propagate through space at the speed of light, which is approximately 3 x 10^5 km/s. Because light takes roughly 8.31 minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth, we would remain unaware of the Sun's demise for that duration. Crucially, the Earth would continue to feel the Sun's gravitational influence for those same 8.31 minutes, only veering off once the gravitational signal reaches us.

To carry this information, Einstein proposed the existence of gravitational waves. While long theorized, these ripples in space-time have moved from indirect evidence to direct observation. Recent detections by Jodrell Bank astronomers of gravitational waves produced by merging black holes in the far universe have provided powerful evidence that the theory remains unchallenged. These observations suggest that Einstein's mathematical precision is at least 99.95% correct, reinforcing a universe where gravity is a consequence of geometry rather than an instantaneous pull.
