Two historic pianos meet Rachmaninoff in a rare performance at The Met
In short: Pianists Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner and Derek Wang perform Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 1 on two distinct instruments from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. This performance highlights the unique craftsmanship of 19th and early 20th-century piano design.
The performance features Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 1, Op. 5, played on a circa 1893 Bechstein grand piano and a 1903-4 Érard grand piano. The Érard, known as the La Mort du Cygne, features design contributions from Louis Majorelle and Victor Emile Prouvé.
Recorded on October 7, 2024, in the Patron's Lounge at The Met, the event showcased these instruments as part of the Dynamic Duos program. Both performers are alumni of the YoungArts initiative, and the presentation was supported by the Friends of Musical Instruments.
