Two historic pianos perform Wagner's Tannhäuser overture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sánchez-Werner and Wang play The Met’s Bechstein and Érard Pianos- “Tannhäuser” by Wagner · 13:46 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Pianists Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner and Derek Wang perform Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser overture using two distinct, historic instruments from The Met's collection. This performance highlights the unique craftsmanship of late 19th and early 20th-century piano design within the museum's Patron's Lounge.

The performance features an 1893 Bechstein grand piano and a 1903-4 Érard grand piano, the latter known as the La Mort du Cygne. These instruments were showcased during the Dynamic Duos program on October 7, 2024, which featured alumni from the YoungArts program.

The Bechstein piano entered the collection in 1993 via the Schonberger Family Foundation, while the Érard, designed in collaboration with Louis Majorelle and Victor Emile Prouvé, was gifted by Yvette and Allen Michaan in 2022. The event was supported by the Friends of Musical Instruments: The Amati.
