Mozart's final sacred masterpiece was a simple gift for a small-town church friend
In short: Composed just months before his death, Ave verum corpus is a brief, serene motet that stands in stark contrast to the dramatic intensity of Mozart's Requiem. Written for a local choirmaster in Baden, this humble work reveals the composer's profound reflection on faith, salvation, and the Eucharist.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed Ave verum corpus, K. 618, in June 1791 while visiting his pregnant wife, Constanze, at a spa in Baden bei Wien. The motet was a gesture of friendship for Anton Stoll, the local church musician at St. Stephan. Mozart dated the autograph 17 June 1791 and recorded it in his personal catalogue the following day. It was intended for the feast of Corpus Christi, which that year fell on 23 June.
At only forty-six bars long, the piece is scored for SATB choir, strings, and organ. Despite its modest scale, the work is harmonically complex, utilizing chromatic structures to explore themes of death and communion. Mozart was simultaneously working on his opera Die Zauberflöte and his famously unfinished Requiem, yet he chose a restrained, sotto voce approach for this sacred setting. It remains a significant stylistic bridge, foreshadowing the declamatory gestures and textures that would later define his Requiem.
The motet’s legacy persisted long after Mozart's death. Franz Liszt later created transcriptions for piano and organ and even quoted the work in his own compositions. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky later paid homage to the piece by incorporating an orchestration of Liszt’s transcription into his fourth orchestral suite, Mozartiana. While the Requiem captures the grandeur of Mozart's final period, Ave verum corpus offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the composer's personal religious beliefs, perfectly tailored for the modest capabilities of a small-town choir.
