In short: Prized for wool as fine as cashmere, the Angora rabbit is a living textile factory. Yet, this luxurious coat comes with a biological catch: without constant human intervention, these rabbits risk fatal digestive blockages. Discover the history, the genetics, and the rigorous grooming required to keep these fluffy creatures thriving.

Originating in Ankara, Turkey, the Angora rabbit arrived in France by 1723, eventually becoming a staple of royal households. Today, they are defined by the 'Angora gene' (l), a mutation that triggers their iconic, continuous hair growth. This trait, often linked to the FGF5 gene, requires owners to harvest the fiber every three to four months through shearing or plucking. Without this regular maintenance, the wool mats and felts, causing the rabbit significant pain and increasing the risk of 'wool block'—a lethal condition where ingested hair creates an impassable digestive obstruction.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) currently recognizes four distinct breeds: the English, French, Giant, and Satin Angora. Each offers unique characteristics. The English Angora is the smallest, known for its 'teddy-bear' appearance and heavy facial furnishings that can obscure its eyes. In contrast, the French and Satin varieties possess 'clean' faces, lacking the tufts found on the English and Giant breeds. The Giant Angora, recognized in 1988, was developed for commercial efficiency and is unique for its three-part coat structure: soft underwool, awn fluff, and strong, straight awn hair.

Beyond the aesthetic, the wool is a functional marvel, measuring 14–16 micrometres in diameter—a fineness comparable to cashmere. However, the production process is demanding. Parasites like Cheyletiella parasitovorax can damage fiber quality, and the specific texture of each breed dictates the difficulty of spinning. For instance, while Satin Angora wool is prized for its high luster and strength, its slippery nature can challenge even experienced spinners. Ultimately, the Angora is a testament to human-directed evolution, where a simple genetic mutation has been cultivated into a global industry of soft, silky, and highly specialized fiber.
