In short: He was exiled from Denmark by his own father, only to return as a legendary conqueror. From raiding the Seine to a daring psychological trick in Italy, the saga of Björn Ironside blends historical naval warfare with the wild legends of the Viking Age.

Björn Ironside, a 9th-century Norse chieftain, appears in contemporary records like the Annales Bertiniani as early as the summer of 855. According to the Norman historian William of Jumièges, Björn was the son of King Ragnar Lodbrok and was actually forced to leave the Danish kingdom by his father to ensure the king's authority remained unchallenged. Rather than fading into obscurity, Björn led massive naval expeditions across Europe and the Mediterranean.

His campaigns were marked by both strategic brilliance and extreme hardship. In 855, alongside the Viking Sigtrygg, Björn raided up the Seine, establishing a stronghold on the island of Oissel. While he faced setbacks against Charles the Bald of West Francia, he maintained a presence in the region for years. His most ambitious feat, however, was a large-scale Mediterranean expedition between 859 and 861. This fleet, co-led by Hastein, navigated the Strait of Gibraltar and reached as far as Italy and North Africa. The journey was costly; a storm claimed approximately 40 ships, and a surprise raid by Andalusian forces near Medina-Sidonia destroyed two more ships using fire catapults, leaving only 20 of the original fleet intact.

The legends surrounding Björn often blur the line between history and myth. The Gesta Danorum attributes his 'Ironside' epithet to his incredible physical strength during a combat against the champion Starkad. While some sagas claim he eventually ruled Sweden and even served as regent of Norway, historians note significant chronological inconsistencies in these accounts. Whether a true king or a legendary figure of the sagas, his exploits left a permanent mark on the medieval landscape of Europe.
