In short: Daniella Levine Cava's path to the mayoralty was paved by four decades of advocacy. Before managing a $14.3 billion budget, she spent years navigating the complexities of child welfare and non-profit leadership, eventually becoming the first woman to lead Miami-Dade County.

Born in New York City in 1955, Daniella Levine Cava moved to Miami in 1980. Her early career was defined by legal and social work; she served as an attorney with Legal Services of Greater Miami and later became the legal director for a court-run child welfare program. These roles established her foundation in serving vulnerable populations before she transitioned into large-scale community organizing.

In 1996, Cava founded Catalyst Miami (originally the Human Services Coalition), where she served as president and CEO until 2013. This organization focused on financial security for low-income families through initiatives like the Prosperity Campaign. Her political career began in 2014 when she won a seat as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 8, representing a diverse area that includes both suburban localities and agricultural communities.

Cava's mayoral journey involved navigating complex electoral hurdles. After placing second in the August 2020 primary with 28% of the vote, she won a runoff election on November 3, 2020, to succeed term-limited Mayor Carlos Giménez. Now overseeing approximately 23,000 employees and nearly 3 million residents, her administration manages an annual budget of roughly $14.3 billion with a focus on infrastructure, housing, and environmental preservation.

Her legislative record includes sponsoring resolutions for the Paris climate agreement in 2017 and creating the Infill Housing Program to develop affordable units on county-owned land. She has also been noted for her response to the Surfside condominium collapse and her advocacy for pedestrian safety and water testing in Biscayne Bay.
