Why the Hudson River flows in two directions and defies standard geography
In short: The Hudson is not a typical river. Because it is a drowned fjord carved by ancient glaciers, the ocean pushes deep into its channel. This creates a tidal estuary where the water flows both north and south, a phenomenon that indigenous nations recognized long before European explorers arrived.
Stretching 315 miles from the Adirondack Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, the Hudson is a geological anomaly. It is technically a drowned river, as rising sea levels following the last ice age flooded its coastal plain. This marine incursion transformed the lower half of the river into a tidal estuary, where the current reverses direction twice daily due to the influence of the ocean, reaching as far inland as the Federal Dam in Troy.
The river's unique character is a direct result of Pleistocene glaciation. The Laurentide ice sheet once buried the entire valley, carving out the Hudson Fjord and depositing massive amounts of glacial till. Before this, the proto-Hudson flowed through New Jersey toward the Chesapeake Bay. Today, the river is unusually straight, with colonial Dutch settlers naming its narrow, meandering sections as reaches. Its deepest point, known as World's End, plunges to 202 feet between the US Military Academy and Constitution Island.
Indigenous peoples, including the Mohican, Mohawk, and Lenape, inhabited the valley for ages, relying on the river for sustenance like sturgeon, shad, and oysters. The Mohican name for the river, Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, translates to 'the river that flows both ways.' While the river later became a strategic gateway for European colonial powers and a vital industrial artery, modern restoration efforts have begun to improve water quality, with sturgeon returning to the river in the twenty-first century.
