A historic political shift: the collapse of Germany's traditional powerhouses
In short: For the first time in German history, the nation's two dominant political pillars—the CDU and SPD—simultaneously failed to win any seats in a single state election. This seismic shift in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern marks a radical departure from the established order, leaving a vacuum filled by a surging far-right.
The 2026 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election, held on September 20, 2026, resulted in a historic political realignment. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) both failed to secure representation in the Landtag, a first for these formerly large parties in a German state election. This follows a period of volatility, including a 'Merz government crisis' and the SPD's narrow escape with only 5.5% of the vote in the March 2026 Baden-Württemberg election. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged as the dominant force, doubling its vote share to 38% and winning 22 of the 36 single-member constituencies. Despite this plurality, the 'firewall policy'—a long-standing German political norm rejecting cooperation with the AfD—prevents them from forming a government. Meanwhile, the SPD maintained a significant presence, securing 35% of the vote and 15 list seats, while the governing coalition of the SPD, The Left, and the Greens is expected to hold on to power.
The election also saw the total exclusion of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), both of which failed to meet the 5% electoral threshold. The results contrast sharply with the 2024 and 2025 national elections, where the SPD performed poorly in the region, winning only 10% and 12% respectively. This local surge for the SPD, paired with the collapse of the traditional center-right, creates a unique legislative landscape where the 'red–red–green' alliance must navigate a state where the far-right holds the most popular support.
