In short: Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, derives its name from a small stream and the Setar tree, a relative of the mango. Beyond its botanical namesake, this strategic northern hub has shaped Malaysian history as the birthplace of two prime ministers and a center for cultural and political development.

Established on 30 December 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II, Alor Setar served as the eighth administrative center of the Kedah Sultanate. The site was chosen for its strategic location at the convergence of two Kedah River estuaries. Originally known as Kota Setar, the settlement grew from a small village into a bustling commercial hub, attracting traders from across the region. Its history is marked by periods of upheaval, including a destructive 1770 attack by a Bugis armada and a 20-year standstill following a Siamese occupation in 1805.

The city’s evolution into a modern capital accelerated at the turn of the 20th century. In 1905, the Legislative Council of Kedah was formed, and the city saw the establishment of its first sanitary board. It later became a focal point for national identity, witnessing the birth of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's founding father, and Mahathir Mohamad, the nation's longest-serving prime minister. During the post-war era, the city hosted mass protests against the Malayan Union, providing a foundation for the country's modern constitution.

Today, Alor Setar is a diverse cultural center covering 666 square kilometers with over 374,000 inhabitants. While the Kedahan Malay community forms the majority, the city is home to significant Chinese, Indian, and Siamese populations. This diversity is reflected in its religious landscape, which features the royal Zahir Mosque, the Thai-inspired Wat Nikrodharam, and various Hindu, Christian, and Sikh places of worship. The city remains a vital transportation and administrative hub, anchored by the Alor Setar Tower and the state government offices in Wisma Darul Aman.
