In short: Once a quiet village defined by its agricultural lands and a sacred temple, Ambattur transformed into a critical industrial hub. Following the post-World War II era, it became the heart of an auto belt, eventually evolving into a massive center for both manufacturing and modern information technology services.

The origins of Ambattur are rooted in its spiritual and agricultural heritage. Its name is believed to derive from the Tamil phrase 'aimbaththu onraam oor,' meaning the fifty-first place, referencing its status as one of 108 Shakthi Sthals. Historically, the area was defined by sprawling farmland irrigated by the Ambattur Lake. However, the mid-20th century brought a radical shift. In the early post-World War II years, the region became a focal point for industrial development in Madras, specifically as part of an 'auto belt' that included areas like Avadi and Ennore.

A pivotal moment occurred when Sir Ivan Stedeford, chairman of Tube Investments in the United Kingdom, formed a joint venture with A. M. Murugappa Chettiar. This partnership, the first of its kind in South India after Independence, led to the establishment of the TI Cycle factory in 1951 on land that was previously a mango grove. The success of this venture, which began manufacturing 'Hercules India' bicycles, catalyzed further industrial growth. By 1964, the government commissioned the Ambattur Industrial Estate, which today spans 1,430 acres and houses approximately 1,800 units, making it the largest small-scale industrial estate in South Asia.

In recent decades, Ambattur has diversified beyond its traditional manufacturing roots. While it remains a hub for auto-ancillary and garment production, the late 2000s saw a surge in IT companies attracted by lower rentals and proximity to residential neighborhoods. Major firms like HCL Technologies, Dell, and Tata Consultancy Services now operate development centers in the area. This transition has reshaped the local economy and real estate market, turning the former village into a bustling urban hub that serves as a vital component of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
