In short: In the 1980s, Ambika reigned as one of the most prolific heroines in South Indian cinema. While many remember the legendary male leads of that era, Ambika’s dominance was so absolute that she once commanded a higher salary than the iconic Mohanlal.

Between 1976 and 1989, Ambika was a central figure in the South Indian film industry, appearing in over 2 heavy-hitting decades of cinema. Her career began as a child artist in the 1976 Malayalam film Chottanikkara Amma, but she soon transitioned into a leading lady. Her versatility allowed her to navigate the distinct film industries of Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, appearing in more than 200 films across these languages. Her early work in the industry included the Malayalam film Seetha, though this appeared much later in her professional journey. She also made her first appearance in Tamil cinema in 1979 with Chakkalathi.

The mid-1980s marked the zenith of her fame. In 1985, the film Kaakki Sattai helped propel her to stardom, and by 1986, she appeared in the commercial success Rajavinte Makan. Notably, during the production of this film, Ambika earned a higher salary than her co-star Mohanlal, reflecting her immense popularity and status at the time. Her filmography is marked by collaborations with the era's most legendary actors, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Chiranjeevi. She also starred alongside Mammootty in the 1987 hit Irupatham Noottandu.

Ambika's career is also a story of family collaboration and entrepreneurship. Alongside her sister Radha, she co-managed ARS Studios, a venture the sisters later transformed into a hotel complex in 2013. While her personal life saw a period of living in the United States following her 1988 marriage to Premkumar Menon, she returned to India after her 1996 divorce to resume her acting career, appearing in films like Periya Manushan in 1997 and later in television roles such as the lead in Zee Tamil's Mrs. Hitler. Beyond the screen, she has contributed to the industry as a designer and a judge for reality programs like Drama Juniors. Her family ties to politics are also notable, as her mother, Kallara Sarasamma, served as a Mahila Congress leader in 2014.
