In short: At the southernmost tip of Sakhalin lies Cape Crillon, a strategic point where Russian weather stations and military bases meet the sea. Beyond its modern utility, the cape hides the ruins of an ancient earthen castle, hinting at a complex history of imperial expansion and maritime discovery.

Cape Crillon, also known as Cape Nishinotoro in Japan, serves as the southernmost extremity of Sakhalin. The site was first identified by the French explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse, who gave the cape its current name. Geographically, it sits just north of the La Pérouse Strait, with Cape Sōya in Japan located approximately 43 kilometres (27 mi) to the south.

The landscape is marked by significant historical and geological features, such as the western rock formation once called Kinfugan, or 'Anvil Rock'. The area has long been a site of human activity and surveillance. Today, the cape hosts a Russian lighthouse, a weather station, and a military base. It is also identified as the Russian terminus for the proposed Sakhalin–Hokkaido Tunnel, a rail project intended to link Russia and Japan.

Archaeological findings at the cape suggest a much older, more complex history of occupation. In 1808, Mamiya Rinzō, surveying for the Tokugawa shogunate, followed Ainu directions to a site called Kogohau, where he found rammed earth walls. These ruins, later called the Shiranushi Earthen Castle, were linked to Imai Kanehira via 1905 Matsumae documents. However, current evidence points to a much deeper origin: the castle may be a colonial product of the Yuan dynasty, with records from the Yuanshi suggesting the general Yangwuludai crossed the sea to construct the castle of Guohuo on Sakhalin.
