How a fifteen-year political stronghold in Maharashtra was dismantled during the 2019 election cycle
In short: The Chikhali Assembly constituency, a key electoral division within the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, was long considered an impenetrable bastion for the Indian National Congress. However, the 2019 legislative elections marked a dramatic shift in local power, as a new representative successfully ended fifteen years of uninterrupted party dominance.
Located in the Buldhana district, the Chikhali Assembly constituency is one of 288 segments that make up the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. Its geographical and administrative boundaries were formally defined by the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies Order of 2008. Under this mandate, the constituency encompasses the Chikhli Tehsil, including revenue circles such as Undri, Amdapur, Eklara, Hatni, Kolara, and the Chikhli Municipal Council, alongside specific parts of the Buldhana Tehsil, namely the Raipur, Dhad, and Mhasla Bk revenue circles.
For years, the constituency was a reliable stronghold for the Indian National Congress. Rahul Siddhvinayak Bondre, representing the party, notably secured a victory in the 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly even during the period often described as the Modi wave. This success reinforced the perception of Chikhali as a secure base for the Congress Party, which maintained its influence in the region for a decade and a half.
The political landscape underwent a significant transformation during the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Election. Shweta Vidyadhar Mahale, running for the Bharatiya Janata Party, secured a decisive victory over the incumbent Congress MLA. By winning with a substantial margin of votes, Mahale effectively dismantled the fifteen-year-old bastion. This transition highlights the shifting electoral dynamics within the Buldhana district, which also includes other constituencies like Sindkhed Raja, Mehkar, Khamgaon, and Jalgaon (Jamod). While Chikhali remains part of the broader Buldhana Lok Sabha constituency, its internal legislative representation serves as a clear example of how entrenched political strongholds can be overturned by changing voter sentiments.
