Davenport, Florida: From a military outpost to a modern, rapidly expanding residential city
In short: Davenport began as a remote military fort during the Second Seminole War in 1838. Today, this Polk County city has transformed into a bustling hub, with its population surging from fewer than 3,000 residents in 2010 to over 9,000 by the 2020 Census, reflecting its rapid growth and development.
The origins of Davenport are rooted in the 1838 establishment of Fort Davenport, a military outpost built during the Second Seminole War. Positioned about 12 miles north of the current city site, the fort was part of a strategic chain of defenses spaced at 20-mile intervals between Fort Brooke and Fort Mellon. It was named for Colonel William Davenport, who commanded local forces during the conflict. While some have suggested the city was named for a railroad conductor, there is no documentary evidence to support this claim.
The modern city emerged in the 1880s following the expansion of the South Florida Railroad. Originally called Horse Creek, the settlement took its name from a local waterway documented in an 1849 U.S. Army survey. By 1884, a post office was established under the Horse Creek name, which was officially changed to Davenport in 1886. The city was formally incorporated in 1915. Throughout the 20th century, the railroad remained central to the area, though the local stations, including one that served as a specialized fertilizer depot, have long since closed.
Davenport’s identity has shifted significantly over time. In the late 20th century, the area was known as Baseball City, a moniker earned after the 1987 redevelopment of a former amusement park into a minor league baseball complex that hosted the Kansas City Royals. Following the park's failure in 1990 and the team's departure in 2003, the stadium was demolished in 2005 and replaced by the Posner Park shopping center. Today, the city is characterized by its humid subtropical climate and its position within the Central Florida Highlands, serving as a growing residential community with a total area of 1.6 square miles.
