A Bollywood blockbuster failure that became a queer cinematic milestone
In short: Can a film be a commercial disaster but a cultural triumph? In 2019, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga broke the mold of mainstream Indian cinema. It traded typical Bollywood tropes for an earnest, unapologetic look at a closeted woman navigating a conservative Punjabi family.
Released on February 1, 2019, the film follows Sweety Chaudhary, a woman living in a traditional household in Moga, Punjab. While her family pressures her to marry, Sweety is secretly in a relationship with a woman named Kuhu. The narrative explores the friction between individual identity and collective tradition, specifically focusing on the challenges of coming out in a conservative society. The production was notable for several firsts and reunions. Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, who are father and daughter in reality, teamed up for this initial project. It also served as a reunion for the popular onscreen couple Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla after 11 years. Despite these high-profile ties, the film was a box office failure, grossing an estimated US$3.3 million worldwide as of late February 2019. Critics, however, lauded its bravery. Reviewers described it as a "whiff of fresh air" compared to previous LGBTQ+ depictions in the industry, noting its move away from mere comedy toward an earnest portrayal of same-sex love. The screenplay was even selected for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' library's Core Collection. The story concludes with a public act of acceptance: the protagonist's father defends her relationship on stage during a play, signaling a shift toward communal understanding.
