In short: Nestled in the suburbs of Guadalajara, Estadio Akron is more than just a home for football. Its unique architecture mimics the surrounding landscape, blending a massive green berm with native forest flora. Beyond its striking appearance, the venue operates as a sophisticated water-harvesting machine for the local environment.

Located in Zapopan, Jalisco, the stadium serves as the home ground for the Liga MX club Guadalajara. Originally known as Estadio Omnilife and Estadio Chivas, it was rebranded in 2017 following a decade-long sponsorship agreement with a lubricant and fuel company. The project began in May 2007 after the club decided to move away from Estadio Jalisco, eventually creating a facility that stands out for its environmental integration.

The stadium is frequently called the Volcano Stadium due to its distinct architectural motif. The outer edges of the structure are covered in a green skin, while the surrounding complex features over 7 hectares of green space planted with native oak varieties. This design choice is intentional, aiming to extend the nearby La Primavera forest directly into the stadium grounds. The natural grass surface, installed in 2012 to replace a controversial artificial pitch, further contributes to this cohesive, year-round green aesthetic.

Sustainability is central to the venue's operation. The facility features a robust system designed to capture rainwater from its roof and playing field. This water is filtered and stored in a tank, providing over 30,000 cubic meters annually for non-potable needs like irrigation and sanitation. Additionally, wastewater is processed at a nearby treatment plant to ensure the complex remains efficient. While it has hosted major events like the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, its role as an ecological extension of the local landscape remains one of its most defining characteristics.
