In short: Long before the modern era, FC Eindhoven stood as the premier football club in its city. Known as the people's club, it once outperformed its wealthy neighbour, PSV. Today, the team competes in the second tier of Dutch football, defined by a storied history and a fierce regional rivalry.

Founded on 16 November 1909 as E.V.V., the club emerged from a merger between Sparta and Eindhovia. Its identity was forged in blue and white, colours derived from the city's crest at the time. By the late 1930s, the club achieved significant success, securing the KNVB Beker in 1937. During the period between 1930 and 1955, the club was arguably the city's most prominent side, often contrasted with PSV, which was associated with the workers of the Philips company.

The transition to professional football in 1954 marked a turning point. E.V.V. Eindhoven claimed the title of Dutch league champions that year, the final time a club achieved this feat before the professional era began. Following this, the club experienced a series of fluctuations, including stints in the Eredivisie and relegations to the Eerste Divisie and even the Tweede Divisie. In 1997, the club underwent a structural shift, moving back to amateur status before a new professional entity, SBV Eindhoven, was established, eventually rebranding as FC Eindhoven in 2002.

Today, the club plays its home matches at the Jan Louwers Stadion. While the Lichtstad Derby against PSV remains a historic fixture, the two clubs have not met in league competition since the 1976–77 season. Instead, FC Eindhoven's primary rivalry is now with Helmond Sport, a club located approximately 15 kilometres away. Despite various challenges, including financial difficulties faced by other clubs in the league and the disruption of the 2019–20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club continues to compete in the Eerste Divisie, maintaining its legacy as a cornerstone of Eindhoven's football culture.
