In short: In 1954, when the Dutch professional league was born, the club in Emmen made a radical choice. They turned down the path to the big leagues, opting to remain amateur. It took over thirty years of identity shifts and rebranding before they finally stepped into the professional spotlight.

Founded on August 21, 1925, as Noordbarge Emmen Combinatie (NEC), the club quickly rebranded to VV Emmen to avoid confusion with NEC Nijmegen. A pivotal moment occurred in 1954: while other clubs joined the newly formed Dutch professional league, VV Emmen intentionally chose to maintain its amateur status. This decision delayed their professional entry for three decades, until 1985 when they finally joined the ranks as VV Emmen.

The club's identity underwent further evolution to clarify its history. In 1988, it split into amateur and professional sections, with the latter known as BVO Emmen. However, the 'BVO' abbreviation caused public confusion, leading the club to rename itself FC Emmen in 2005. This change was intended to better reflect the club's heritage and prevent fans from assuming 'BVO' was a stylistic acronym like PSV or ADO.

FC Emmen's modern history is defined by a rapid ascent and a struggle for stability. After reaching the Eredivisie for the first time in 2018, they secured their spot for the following season by finishing 14th. Their tenure in the top flight was marked by extremes: a dismal start in the 2020–21 season (earning only six points in 22 matches) followed by an 8-match unbeaten run. They eventually spent three seasons in the top tier before returning to the Eerste Divisie, where they have since navigated the complexities of the promotion and relegation playoffs.

The club plays at De Oude Meerdijk, a stadium built in 1977. The site holds historical weight beyond local football, having hosted several matches during the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship.
