The California town that served as a fur trade terminus
In short: Before it was a quiet community in San Joaquin County, French Camp was a strategic hub for the North American fur trade. It served as a vital meeting point where families and trappers gathered to navigate the rugged wilderness of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Established in 1832 by Michel Laframboise, French Camp served as the southernmost regular camp site for the Hudson's Bay Company's southern fur brigades. These brigades traveled from Fort Vancouver (modern-day Vancouver, Washington) to collect furs across the continent. The location was so central to this industry that it was also known as Castoria, derived from the Latin word 'castor,' meaning beaver.
The settlement’s geography was dictated by its proximity to water and mountains. It sat at the southern end of a slough in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, providing easy waterway transportation. Heading southeast towards the Sierra Nevada foothills, a path provided another way for the Mariposa Road (a section of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road). This path became favored during rainy seasons due to its superior drainage and eventually evolved into today's French Camp Road.
The area’s history is layered with complex transitions. In 1844, Charles Maria Weber and William Gulnac promoted a white settlers' colony on 'Rancho Campo de los Franceses,' preserving the Spanish name for the site. While it served as a terminus for the Oregon-California trail used by French-Canadian trappers between 1832 and 1845, its later history includes the relocation of Japanese Americans during WWII under Executive Order 9066.
Today, French Camp remains a distinct census-designated place. While it is the oldest settlement in San Joaquin County, it is characterized by a high institutional population; approximately 36.9% of its residents are institutionalized, largely due to the presence of the county jail, juvenile hall, and children's shelter.
