The massive province that surrounds the heart of South Korea
In short: Gyeonggi Province is the most populous province in South Korea, acting as the vital ring around Seoul. Covering 10% of the nation's territory, this region is a powerhouse of industry and a central hub for the entire Korean peninsula.
The name Gyeonggi translates to "Seoul and the surrounding areas of Seoul," a fitting description for its role as the nation's economic and administrative backbone. While Seoul has been administered as a separate special city since 1946, and Incheon as a metropolitan city since 1981, the two together with Gyeonggi form the Sudogwon metropolitan area. This massive cluster contains over 26 million people—more than half of South Korea's total population.
Historically, the region has been a political prize for millennia. Since the Three Kingdoms period, the Han River Valley has shifted between the control of Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. It rose as a central region during the Goryeo dynasty, when the capital was set in Gaesong, and the name "Gyeonggi" has been officially used since 1018. During the Joseon dynasty, the area was restructured to include cities like Suwon and Anseong, a configuration that remains largely similar to today's administrative boundaries.
Modern Gyeonggi is a landscape of extreme contrast and rapid development. The province is divided by the Han River, with mountainous terrain to the north and fertile plains to the south. It has transformed from a traditional agricultural base into a high-tech manufacturing giant. The southern region hosts global leaders like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, while the province as a whole is modernizing its industrial structure toward IT, design, and tourism. This growth is supported by a massive transportation network, including the Gyeongin Line—Korea's first railroad—and the high-speed KTX services.
