Hattusa: The Bronze Age Metropolis That Once Ruled the Heart of Anatolia
In short: Perched on a rugged slope in modern Turkey, Hattusa served as the formidable capital of the Hittite Empire. This sprawling city featured massive fortifications, intricate temple complexes, and a unique urban layout that remains one of the most significant archaeological sites from the ancient Near and Middle East.
Hattusa, located in the Boğazkale District of Çorum Province, was divided into a lower city and an upper city, with the latter serving as a vast temple district for the Hittite and Hurrian pantheon. At its peak, the city was enclosed by a monumental wall stretching over 8 km, featuring five known gateways, including the famous Lion’s Gate and the Sphinx Gate. The site’s architecture, characterized by complex rock masonry and artificial bastions, reflects the sophisticated engineering of the Hittite civilization.
The site’s history is marked by cycles of destruction and rebirth. Around 1700 BC, the city was burned, an event attributed to King Anitta of Kussara, who famously cursed anyone who dared to resettle it. Yet, the city rose again, becoming the seat of the Hittite Empire under King Labarna around 1650 BC. It remained a central political and religious hub until the collapse of the Hittite state around 1200 BC, a period potentially influenced by regional drought and the gradual disintegration of the imperial apparatus.
Beyond the city walls, the site includes the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya, an open-air temple featuring rich relief art of gods, goddesses, and King Tuthaliya IV. Today, the site is protected under Turkish National Conservation Law No 2863 and is part of the Bogazköy – Alacahöyük National Park. Systematic excavations, primarily led by the German Archaeological Institute, have uncovered everything from royal palaces to large buried granaries, offering a comprehensive look at a civilization that exerted a dominating influence across Anatolia and northern Syria for centuries.
