Why this Chinese city is known as the River City and a winter wonder
In short: Jilin City, a historic hub in northeast China, is defined by the Songhua River that wraps around it. While it once served as a vital Ming dynasty naval base and a Qing dynasty fortress, today it is celebrated for its unique winter rime ice and its deep connection to Manchu history.
Jilin City has long been a strategic location in Northeast China. During the Ming dynasty, the Yongle Emperor utilized the city to build river fleets to secure control over Manchuria. By 1673, it was formally established as a fort city, and in 1676, it became the seat of the Military Governor of Ninguta. Its nickname, River City, was immortalized by the Kangxi Emperor during his 1682 visit, when he described the scene of ships and masts gathered along the riverbank in a poem.
The city's geography is as significant as its history. Surrounded by four mountains—North, Long Tan, Zhuque, and Turtle—the city is laid out in a pattern reminiscent of the Taiji. This landscape creates a unique microclimate. In winter, the Songhua River remains unfrozen, allowing water vapor to rise and crystallize on willow branches in the cold air. This phenomenon, known as rime ice, draws tourists every January and February. Nearby, the Wulajie Old City serves as a reminder of the region's Manchu heritage, where the Kangxi Emperor once fished for sturgeon and where the Manchu language is still taught in a local school.
Despite its natural beauty, the city has faced significant environmental challenges. In 2005, a chemical plant explosion released benzene into the Songhua River, forcing downstream cities like Harbin to suspend water supplies. The 2010 summer floods caused further devastation, washing thousands of chemical-filled barrels into the river and resulting in significant loss of life. Today, Jilin City remains a major regional center, connected by high-speed rail and serving as a gateway to both the history of the Qing dynasty and the rugged climate of the Siberian-influenced northeast.
